The grand Chhath festival is Historic
The tradition of celebrating the Chhath festival at Rajghat in Dhanwar has been ongoing for nearly three hundred years. Akhileshwar Narayan Dev, a retired teacher from Adarsh College Rajdhanwar and a descendant of the former Maharaja Maheshwari Narayan Dev of Dhanwar, says that this tradition began around 1700 AD.
According to him, it was started by Mod Narayan Dev, who came to Dhanwar from Siur village in Pakribarwan block of Nawada district, Bihar. He initiated the Chhath Puja at this site. At that time, his kingdom spanned a hundred kos (a traditional measure of distance). His successors—Khem Bahadur Narayan Dev, Girivar Narayan Dev, Ranbahadur Narayan Dev, Ishwari Prasad Narayan Dev, and Maheshwari Narayan Dev—continued and upheld this tradition.

Devotees who perform the Chhath Puja at Rajghat have a deep belief that if they worship Chhathi Maiya with a pure heart and cleanliness, all their wishes will be fulfilled. Residents and social workers from Dhanwar, like Nandlal Sahu, Pankaj Barnwal, Anil Kumar, and many others, say that praying here removes all sorrows, and Chhathi Maiya grants every desire.
In the beginning, very few people came to Rajghat for Chhath Puja. But over time, as more people’s wishes were fulfilled, the number of devotees began to grow. Now, every year, not hundreds but thousands of devotees come here with their hopes and wishes. Social worker Munna Sahu says that as people’s faith grew, the number of devotees visiting Rajghat steadily increased.
